Our Story

10 TORR Distilling and Brewing Co was created by several engineers, metal fabricators, plant operators thru after-work discussions over a couple beers.

“From the first conversation about beer two years ago, we had a desire to have a bit more fun within our industry, which is now a reality at 10 TORR,”

said Randy Soule, owner of Encore DEC.

Encore DEC has been designing, engineering, building and operating refinery and industrial plants for over 12 years. These refineries are fabricated in Reno by Encore’s engineers, fabricators and welders for use around the world.

Following an installation day in 2015 at a refinery plant in Mississippi, Encore’s personnel were having a beer and burger at a large, 250-beer tap house. Conversation easily turned from the same old refinery industry issues to the technology of brewing and distilling.

“The conversation developed into ideas and then evolved into real thoughts about designing and building our own brewery and distillery that would produce beers and spirits that were much more enjoyable than diesel fuel,”

said Soule.

10 Torr would utilize Encore’s chemical engineer, Will Whipple, who already had a passion for the brewing industry and extensive knowledge from his garage experiments and long-time participation at Burning Man’s brewing camps. Encore’s entire employee team would bring their talents from the engineering, construction, fabrication and refining world to build a first class and highly advanced distillery and brewery.

After cost budgets and some research was completed, Encore finally found a potential building, a former 1940 grocery store building at Mill and High Street in Reno, NV.

The 10 Torr’s Mill Street facility was funded, designed, developed, engineered and built by Encore DEC. The tanks, fermenters, process vessels, columns, platforms, walls, ceilings, tables, chairs, bar, systems and even the front door were all completed in-house.

The distillery and brewery deploy special distillation techniques and state-of-the-art control systems in addition to structural features and finishes not found in any other facility. All of Encore’s engineers, which include chemical, civil, electrical, and structural, are graduates of the University of Nevada, Reno.

Head brewer Melissa Test is a biology graduate from UNR and certified judge with the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). She takes that knowledge and experience from a decade of home brewing with Whipple to develop the beer recipes that are being created at the facility.

The beer and spirit products are then packaged and sold at the 10 Torr taproom or sold through New West Distribution to stores and tap houses throughout the region.

10 Torr Spirits

There are less than a handful of distillers in North America who use a vacuum distillation method. 10 Torr’s proprietary vacuum distillation process (also known as cold distillation) occurs at extremely low pressure at ambient, room temperature. In traditional distillation, heat is applied which creates chemical reactions that cause unwanted, harsh flavors. 10 Torr Technology distills without added heat thus eliminating these chemical reactions allowing the pure and unique flavors of the spirits to shine through without any chemical harshness. Currently offering a vodka and soon a London-style dry gin with locally-sourced botanicals.

10 Torr Beers

The engineering team and metal craftsmen at Encore DEC designed and built all the custom equipment to best showcase the pure flavors you get from independently grown hops and malt. We clarify our beer through a centrifuge to best protect the aromas and flavor without adding chemical fining agents. Advanced design, controls and technique are used every step of the way to create the best beer possible.

Graham Gerrard

Tap Room Manager

Born and Raised in South Carolina with a love for the outdoors camping, biking, fishing. Graduated from College of Charleston 2007 with a Business Degree. Found my passion for Craft Beer while bar tending in college. After several corporate jobs returned to bar tending at a buddy’s craft beer bar to allow more time to travel and snowboard. After spending most of my life on the coast, moved to Reno this July to be closer to the mountains. When not working at the Brewery I can be found snowboarding in the winters and mountain biking in the summer.

James P. Buda

Director of Sales and Marketing

James is a twenty-year veteran of the beverage industry, with experience in all levels of the three-tier system. He was born and raised in Southeast Michigan in a large Polish family (five sisters and a brother) that ran one of the largest catering businesses in the metro Detroit area. Buda grew up a devout University of Michigan fan, where he graduated from in 1996. An avid traveler, Buda has visited all 50 states and lived in four corners of America. When not talking about delicious, hand crafted beers and spirits, you’ll find James on the golf course or hitting the slopes with his five-year old daughter and seven-year old son along with his beautiful wife. Food, wine, and family are all passions of his.

Matt Blagen

Sales and distribution

Highly dependable Sales Representative who is dedicated to perfection. Known for excellent customer service and client satisfaction. Born and raised in Reno and graduated from University of Nevada, Reno in 2007. Has been working in the craft beer industry for 3 years and 15 years in the service industry. Enjoys snowboarding, golfing, and playing guitar in his free time.

Melissa Test

Head Brewer/Distiller

Melissa was born and raised in Nevada.  She is a biology and photography graduate from UNR and a recognized judge with the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). She takes that knowledge and experience from over a decade of home brewing with Will to develop and make the beer recipes that are being created at the facility.  Melissa likes to go camping, hiking, and snowboarding when she isn’t making delicious beer and spirits.
